If you are deaf or have one ‘good side’, then it is important to tell parents and children. Otherwise, they may think you are inattentive or disinterested.

If a parent is deaf, then you need to face the person, talk at normal volume and speak clearly, without your hand in front of your mouth – an unconscious habit of some people.

Do not raise your voice; shouting distorts any sounds that can be heard and the process of interpreting lip and mouth movements.

Some parents have a stutter that interrupts the fluency of their speech. This difficulty usually becomes worse when people feel rushed. You will help by avoiding any body language messages of being short of time. Do not finish parents’ sentences for them; it is experienced as discourteous and you will often be wrong.

A parent with a hearing or speech disability may find communication easier through a hearing friend. This three-way conversation needs the same care as when you do not speak the same language: share your attention between the parent and the friend.
